If you take time off from work for childbirth

“Maternity Allowance” is paid when a female insured person cannot earn a salary due to time taken off from work for childbirth.

Maternity Allowance

When a female insured person takes time off from work for childbirth, she is paid two-thirds of her average standard monthly remuneration over the most recent 12-month period ÷ 30 per day off to help cover living costs during that period. This benefit is referred to as “Maternity Allowance”.

When you have been paid a standard monthly remuneration amount over the most recent 12-month period before payments start

The average standard monthly remuneration is calculated after totaling the standard monthly remuneration for the 12 months before the payment start date.

(Ex.) (280,000 yen × 2 months + 300,000 yen × 10 months) ÷ 12 months ÷ 30(*1) × 2/3(*2) = 6,593 yen (daily amount of Maternity Allowance)

  • *1: Rounded to the nearest ten after dividing by 30
  • *2: Rounded to the nearest whole number after multiplying by 2/3

If the period before the payment start date is less than 12 months

The calculations will assume the smaller of the following two amounts:
  • Average standard monthly remuneration over the most recent continuous period before payments start
  • Average standard monthly remuneration for all Society insured persons as of September 30 of the preceding fiscal year

The society's additional benefits: “Maternity Allowance Additional Sum”

The Health Insurance Society also provides its own independent benefits (additional benefits) in addition to the Maternity Allowance.

The Society adds its own additional benefit (additional sum) to the childbirth allowance. The amount of the Maternity Allowance Additional Sum per workday not worked is the average standard monthly remuneration over the most recent 12-month period before payments start ÷ 30 × 11/60.

(280,000 yen × 2 months + 300,000 yen × 10 months) ÷ 12 months ÷ 30 days × 11/60 = 1,813 yen (daily amount of Maternity Allowance Additional Sum)

Cases in which you are eligible to receive the Maternity Allowance and Injury and Sickness Allowance concurrently

If you are eligible to receive Maternity Allowance and Injury and Sickness Allowance concurrently, payment of the Maternity Allowance will be granted priority. However, if the Maternity Allowance paid is less than the Injury and Sickness Allowance, the difference between the two amounts will be paid.

Maternity Allowance as a continual benefit after you leave your employer

Even after you leave your employer and lose eligibility as an insured person, if you satisfy the payment conditions, you can continue to receive the Maternity Allowance benefit. However, additional benefits will no longer be paid from the date of loss of eligibility.

Payment conditions

  • You must have been an insured person for a continual period of at least one year before leaving your employer.
  • You must have been receiving Maternity Allowance as of the date you left your employer or satisfy the payment conditions for Maternity Allowance.
    • * “Satisfy the payment conditions for Maternity Allowance” refers to eligibility to receive Maternity Allowance even if you did not actually receive the benefit. Specifically, you must satisfy both of the following conditions:
      • ①You must have left your employer without returning to work during the period covered by the Maternity Allowance benefit.
      • ②You must not have been working on the date on which you left your employer.

You are exempt from paying insurance premiums during maternity leave, childcare leave, or other similar leave

To reduce financial burdens while taking childcare or similar leave (including paternity leave [newborn care leave]), health insurance societies exempt insured persons and their employers from the payment of insurance premiums during the period of such leave in cases where employers have applied for such exemption. This exemption applies from the month in which the leave starts through the month immediately preceding the month that includes the day following the end of the leave.
If the month that includes the day on which childcare or similar leave starts is the same as the month that includes the day following the end of the leave, insurance premiums are waived for the month if the number of days of such leave is 14 days or longer.
Insurance premiums on bonuses are waived only if childcare or similar leave has been taken for a continuous period of longer than one month that includes the last day of the month in which the bonus was paid.
Employers can also apply on behalf of their employees for exemptions from the requirement to pay insurance premiums during the period of maternity leave.
For more information, contact the staff responsible at your employer. Your employer will apply for these benefits.

  • ** Period of childcare or similar leave: the period of childcare leave or similar leave that conforms to the system of childcare leave, up to the child's third birthday at the latest.
  • ** Period of maternity leave: Period during which you did not work due to pregnancy or childbirth, within the period starting 42 days before birth (98 days for multiple births) and ending 56 days after birth
  • ** Paternity leave (newborn care leave): A system under which eligible persons may take leave for up to four weeks during the eight-week period after the birth of a child. This leave may be taken separately from childcare leave.
